Volodymyr Zelensky has made an important visit to Saudi Arabia to strengthen Ukrainian-Saudi defense cooperation. The visit carries strategic significance as Ukraine focuses on developing mass anti-drone technologies against "Shahed"-type drones and enhancing its own countermeasures.
Recently, Ukrainian engineers have achieved significant success, especially in producing affordable anti-drone systems compared to Western counterparts. Over 200 Ukrainian specialists are already in the Middle East, demonstrating the effectiveness of these new technologies. Ukraine is proposing a partnership: Saudi Arabia supplies Ukraine with Patriot system missiles, while Ukraine assists in drone defense.
However, the export of drones by Ukrainian manufacturers remains restricted by internal limitations. Defense sector representatives stress the need for foreign currency from external markets to further develop the industry and invest in modern innovations. There is also concern that some Western military aid may be redirected to the Middle East at Ukraine's expense, though no final decisions have been made.
Zelensky's visit could open new opportunities for cooperation, technological investment, and addressing strategic challenges to strengthen the defense capabilities of both Ukraine and the Middle East. Internal reforms and increased government-parliament cooperation play a key role in overcoming organizational issues and improving the defense sector's effectiveness.
In summary, closer cooperation with Middle Eastern countries could mark a key phase in developing Ukraine's defense industry, provide access to new markets, and reinforce Ukraine's international standing.
