Attempt on Medvedev during Ukrainian drone strike on Smolensk aircraft plant: Russian, Serbian reactions and protest situation

Dmitry Medvedev came under a Ukrainian drone attack during his visit to the Smolensk aircraft plant. Russia downplays incident, protests begin, Serbia expels Russians.

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, came under attack from Ukrainian drones during his visit to the Smolensk aircraft plant. This enterprise has long been sanctioned by the US, Canada, and EU, and produces aircraft, drones, and components for the Russian defense industry.

While Medvedev was present, the plant was attacked by Ukrainian drones. Russian authorities claimed there was no serious damage or casualties. However, independent Telegram channels and Ukrainian intelligence maintain the strike was much larger in scale. Emergency and ambulance vehicles reportedly arrived at the site, with key targets believed to be facilities manufacturing drones and missiles.

Meanwhile, in Russia, confrontations have begun between police and protesters advocating for internet freedom, with the first arrests of activists already reported. Ukraine has also complicated Russian shipping in the Gulf of Finland, forcing Russia to prepare a force majeure announcement for its energy contracts and adding pressure to the Russian economy.

Serbia, once seen as pro-Russian, has tightened its rules on Russian citizens’ stays, intensifying deportations and strictly observing the 30-day visa-free rule. This affects Russian officials, businessmen, and ordinary citizens staying beyond official limits.

These developments demonstrate increasing pressure on Russia from multiple directions — at the military front, in global politics, and within society. Sanctions, strikes on defense infrastructure, expulsion of Russians from Serbia, and domestic protests highlight Russia's growing isolation.
