Ostap Drozdov on Political Infantilism, Zelensky’s Ratings and the Impact of War on Ukraine: Key Insights from the Interview

Ukrainian journalist Ostap Drozdov reflects on political infantilism, politicians' ratings, political culture, the war, and Ukraine's future.

On “Blyznyuk Live” YouTube channel, journalist Ostap Drozdov commented on sociological surveys regarding trust in President Volodymyr Zelensky, arguing that a significant part of society shows political infantilism and lacks a conscious political subjectivity.

Drozdov noted that about half of Ukrainians distrust Zelensky, while a considerable group continues to support him, regardless of recent events. He believes this reflects the absence of a true political culture, rooted in an era when oligarchs shaped political projects to serve their own interests.

He criticized the existence of high-ranking parties without real structure and stressed the catastrophic rise of populism, further intensified by the war. Drozdov contends that a prolonged war deepens the public's passivity and disillusionment in politics.

The journalist also addressed the lack of a skilled reserve for meaningful politics, the absence of a societal culture for demanding more from politicians, and the danger of prolonged power in a time of martial law. Drozdov predicts that after the war, most criticism will be directed at the president and his inner circle due to the structure of sole power.

The interview also covers the war’s influence on political activity, the spread of populism, Ukraine’s relations with Hungary, and possible scenarios for the country after the conflict ends.
