Europe, USA and Ukraine: Divisions and Alliances in the War Against Russia and Iran

Political expert Valeriy Klochok analyzes the complex historical, geopolitical and economic relations between the USA, Europe and Ukraine amid the war with Russia and tensions with Iran.

The YouTube channel 'We Are Ukraine' hosted a profound analytical discussion with Valeriy Klochok, a political scientist and head of the Tower Center for Public Analytics, on the global geopolitical situation and the roles of Ukraine, Europe, and the US in the war with Russia and tensions with Iran.

The conversation addressed the history of transatlantic relations, when Europe focused on social issues with US financial support, delegating security to America. With the war in Ukraine, differences between the US, EU, and NATO in supporting Ukraine and responding to Russian aggression became evident. The Biden administration's active stance differed from Trump’s, who urged Europe to take more responsibility for its own security.

Klochok noted that there is currently no unity in resolving the conflict: the EU is delaying decisions, while the US imposes strict conditions on Ukraine, including regarding financial aid. The discussion analyzed the positions of European politicians on the status of Ukrainian refugees and continued support amid an extended war, as well as future prospects for economic and energy cooperation with Russia.

Other topics included threats to food and energy security from Middle Eastern conflicts, the role of Iran and Trump’s actions, sanctions against Belarus, and cooperation with China. The expert emphasized Ukraine’s need to build alliances with Northern European countries and adapt policy to a changing world order. It was concluded that a quick end to the war is not expected, and Western support for Ukraine will remain limited and conditional.
