Ukraine, the EU and NATO: Political Dialogue, Security Guarantees and Domestic Challenges

A discussion on Ukraine’s path to EU integration, security guarantees for the EU, Estonian statements, reform progress, and election prospects.

On April 2, analysts from the Center for Public Analytics "Vezha" held a discussion with political scientist Ihor Reiterovych, focusing on Ukraine’s current political processes at home and abroad. The main topic concerned the statement by Estonia’s Foreign Minister that the EU needs security guarantees from Ukraine, citing the strength of its army and sparking further talk of integration.

Experts noted that Baltic countries’ support for Ukraine remains consistent, and such statements encourage Ukraine’s accession to the EU and, potentially, NATO. However, integration depends not only on external backing but also on domestic reforms and dialogue among branches of government. The national parliament lags in adopting key EU-oriented bills, affecting the timeline of EU accession.

Political scientist Reiterovych emphasized that Ukraine’s strong military is a competitive advantage and could be crucial for EU security. However, to speed up integration, it is essential to fulfill all domestic requirements, in particular harmonizing legislation and ensuring effective cooperation between the government and parliament.

Another issue discussed was the preparation for elections and ensuring voting rights for Ukrainians abroad. The expectation is that elections will be held after martial law ends, in accordance with constitutional regulations.

Experts concluded that creating a clear roadmap for joining the EU and resolving internal political issues is critical for Ukraine’s further convergence with Europe and for strengthening its position in international negotiations.
