Coalition of Independents: New Geopolitical Alliances and Ukraine's Place

Emmanuel Macron called for a coalition of independent nations, free from both Chinese and US influence. Analysis of implications for Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the creation of a coalition of independent nations as an alternative to both Chinese influence and the unpredictability of US policy. Suggested participants include Australia, India, and South Korea, indicating the interests of not just France but the entire European Union.

This initiative is linked to US President Donald Trump's sharp statements regarding NATO and European partners. During Trump's tenure, European countries have grown increasingly skeptical about reliable transatlantic relations and have sought to develop their own security framework.

The formation of a 'coalition of independents' will have direct consequences for Ukraine. While the US has shifted its role more toward mediation in Russia-Ukraine talks, it remains a critical partner for security and arms supplies. At the same time, this coalition would challenge illusions among Ukraine's political elite about the possibility of special relations with China, as its members are unlikely to support Chinese dominance.

Ukraine's choice between partnership with Europe or other global powers is clear—without European backing, the risk to its territorial integrity increases. Joining new alliances should mean insistence on sovereignty and active Ukrainian participation, especially considering the considerable combat experience of its armed forces.

The 'coalition of independents' could guarantee respect for smaller states' sovereignty and act as a counterweight to global actors. For Ukraine, it offers the opportunity not only to be part of a European force but also to be a vital partner in ensuring continental security.
