Legalization of short-barreled firearms: why it matters after the Kyiv tragedy

Analysis of the Kyiv incident, discussion of legalizing short-barreled firearms for citizens, and the role of police and veterans.

Recently, a tragic incident in Kyiv has reignited the debate in Ukraine about personal security and the legalization of short-barreled firearms. Following public outcry, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has pledged to address the issue. There is growing belief that legalization will not increase gun violence, but instead may deter criminals and foster respect, as demonstrated in other countries.

Organized crime, already with illegal access to weapons, is often shielded by corruption, leaving ordinary people vulnerable. In democracies such as Switzerland and Moldova, simpler legal procedures for owning weapons are accompanied by low crime rates.

After the terror attack in Kyiv, there are proposals to allow veterans and military personnel—those best prepared—to legally purchase weapons, with the possibility of extending this right to the wider population under strict rules in the future.

The possibility of citizens acquiring non-lethal (traumatic) weapons is also discussed as a self-defense measure. The importance of fostering a responsible gun culture and practical first aid skills is underlined, including tactical medicine training for emergencies.

The author highlights current police challenges, such as staffing shortages, insufficient funding, and the critical leadership role of figures like General Yevhen Zhukov. Despite criticism of police actions during the crisis, organizational improvements are emphasized as essential for increased public safety.

Citizens are advised to actively write to lawmakers and authorities to expedite necessary legal changes regarding firearms and self-defense provisions. The article also stresses that self-defense and basic medical training can save lives in dangerous situations.
