Hungary’s New Leader Sets Ultimatums for Ukraine, EU Reacts

Hungary’s new leader echoes Orbán’s stance, setting preconditions for Ukraine’s EU accession. The EU and Kyiv respond to emerging obstacles.

Hungary's new leader, Magyar, has outlined conditions for Ukraine's accession to the European Union that closely mirror those previously set by Viktor Orbán. Among the chief demands are official local government communications in Hungarian and guaranteed parliamentary representation for Hungarian parties in Ukraine's parliament.

Experts highlight that such provisions do not exist in Hungary itself, where there are no separate Austrian or German parties in parliament. This has drawn criticism of the new demands as undemocratic and incompatible with European standards.

Sources including Bloomberg suggest Magyar's steps signal a continuation of Orbán's policies by his younger successor. Opposition figures in Hungary warn Magyar may perpetuate efforts to block Ukraine’s EU integration and avoid European prosecutorial oversight.

Ongoing EU discussions are aimed at changing Hungary’s government stance. Brussels pressures for unblocking official accession talks with Ukraine. In Kyiv, officials note that the new prime minister is already placing obstacles akin to Orbán’s legacy.

Simultaneously, Russia claims readiness for a unilateral ceasefire ahead of May 9, which Ukrainian authorities see as a move to regroup and replenish missile stockpiles. Polls from KMIS show 57% of Ukrainians oppose concessions over Donbas, and trust in Western security guarantees has declined.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has extended martial law and mobilization for another 90 days, stating the war will end only when reliable security guarantees from partners are in place. The Ukrainian military reports successes against Russian targets in Crimea, fueling fears among Russian correspondents of a possible counteroffensive.

Hungary’s political stance influences Ukraine’s EU prospects, with European diplomats stressing the need for unity. Ukraine continues to rely on European support while strengthening its defense and technology sectors.
