China's Role in the War in Ukraine: Strategic Interests and Support for Moscow

An analysis of how and why China supports Moscow in the war against Ukraine, including economic, political, and military aspects and China's long-term goals.

The war in Ukraine has become a pivotal factor not only for the country's future but also in shaping the new global order. China is increasingly acting as a hidden ally to Moscow, with trade volume between China and Russia rising to $250 billion a year—almost double the pre-war level.

Officially, China claims neutrality and calls for peace, but it avoids openly condemning Russian aggression, often abstaining from votes on anti-Russia resolutions. China supports the idea of a 'crisis,' rather than calling it a 'war,' and presented a 12-point peace plan that lacks explicit requirements for restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity.

China has become the primary source of Russian imports, accounting for nearly half the market. Chinese automakers now hold a large share of Russia’s car market, and dual-use goods such as semiconductors, drones, and parts are widely supplied—up to 80% of critically important drone components used by Russia come from China.

China is developing alternative payment systems that help circumvent sanctions. Despite official restrictions, financial support reaches Russia through intermediaries and alternative channels.

There have even been reports of Chinese mercenaries fighting alongside Moscow's forces. China uses the Ukrainian battlefield to gather experience in modern warfare and drone tactics, preparing its military for possible future conflicts.

The main strategic goal for China is to weaken the positions of the US and the West, using the conflict to change the balance of global power. China is unlikely to allow Russia’s defeat, as that would free the US to focus fully on China, particularly in relation to Taiwan.

From Beijing’s perspective, a prolonged war or frozen conflict is preferable to a complete end of fighting and restoration of Ukraine's territories. China aims to expand its global alliances, financial systems, and strengthen its position in the evolving international order.
