Washington Summit Results: Security Guarantees and Diplomatic Maneuvers Analyzed

Interview with an expert on outcomes of the Washington and Alaska summits, security guarantees for Ukraine, and major diplomatic strategies.

In an interview, the expert provided a detailed analysis of the recent Washington summit and its connection to the summit in Alaska. According to him, the situation is often ambiguously interpreted by both the media and politicians.

Russia, led by Putin, attempted to offer Trump a simplified solution to the war: Ukrainian territorial concessions in exchange for the US's status as a peacemaker. Over the past six months, Western countries, especially the EU and Ukraine, have adapted their diplomatic strategies to avoid conflicts when interacting with Trump, instead offering him concrete solutions—chief among them, security guarantees for Ukraine.

Ukrainian and European diplomats presented a detailed vision of such guarantees, including military support, air assistance, and demining efforts. This stand contrasts with the Russian position, which advocates for a model similar to the Budapest Memorandum, with each guarantor having veto power and China’s inclusion—effectively undermining these guarantees' efficacy.

The long-term effect of these talks remains unclear: Russians are avoiding active statements, and the organization of a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin is still uncertain. The expert also highlighted China's likely influence on Putin's position after the Alaska summit and the overall instability of the diplomatic landscape.
