World reacts to massive Russian attack: Western statements, sanctions, and readiness for new measures

Western leaders respond rapidly to Russia's recent attack on Ukraine: new statements, coordinated sanctions, and Europe's preparation for security challenges.

On 7 September, Russia conducted a large-scale aerial attack across Ukraine, including strikes on Kyiv and the Boryspil area. Ukrainian air defense shot down many drones, but civilian casualties were reported, including the deaths of a two-month-old baby and its mother.

The international response was swift and decisive. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Russia’s actions, stressing unwavering support for Ukraine. Other European leaders—Latvia's president, Estonia’s foreign minister, France’s President Macron, and Poland’s PM Tusk—also condemned the escalation and called for tougher sanctions on Moscow.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated Europe’s full support for Ukraine. EU delegations are preparing to meet in Washington to discuss stricter restrictions against Russia. Donald Trump told reporters he is ready to introduce a new round of sanctions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US and EU are ready to coordinate sanctions to push Russia’s economy towards collapse.

There is concern that China might step up support for Russia, complicating its relations with the EU ahead of a scheduled visit by Chinese officials to Brussels in October. The ongoing war places additional strain on trade and diplomatic ties.

European countries, especially Germany, are stepping up preparations for possible security threats, including forming strategic food reserves and strengthening defense. Ukrainian intelligence reports that Russia is ramping up production of new military hardware and weaponry despite sanctions.

OPEC countries have announced plans to increase oil production, which could affect Russia’s economy. However, a swift resolution to the war is not expected. The main Western strategy remains exhausting Russia’s resources and preserving transatlantic unity.
