Herd Mentality, War and the Value of Democracy: Current Social Moods in Ukraine

Reflections on collective mindset, the challenges of war, and the significance of democracy and freedom for Ukrainian society.

Herd mentality often captivates masses but has a dual nature. Collective solidarity is powerful, but persistent unanimity can become toxic and threaten independent thinkers. Such unity is relevant only in crisis, as seen at the onset of the war, when society had to act together.

As war drags on, herd mentality turns into conformity, stalling progress. Ukraine already experienced the peak of social unity in 2022-2023. Now, in the context of complex scenarios, unanimity is increasingly associated with censorship and autocracy. Western observers describe Ukraine's political system as a hybrid autocracy, partly justified by martial law.

Diversity of thought is growing in society, yet top-down narratives sometimes impose a single viewpoint. People need to feel able to think and express themselves freely. Soviet views on strong leaders persist in Ukraine, but more people are turning to genuine democratic values.

Democracy is about pluralism, competitive markets, and transparency. Losing freedom makes any state meaningless. The ability to choose and remain oneself is the key value for modern individuals.
