Western Dilemmas: Europe's Role in Conflicts with Russia and Iran, Trump's Influence and the Future of Security

A conversation about Europe's passivity in dealing with Russia and Iran, its relationship with the US, possible decisions amid threats, and Trump's leadership.

In the discussion of current politics, experts highlight the West’s similar approaches to Russia and Iran, where sanctions have brought comparable outcomes, but crucial lessons remain unaddressed by European leaders. Europe's passivity in supporting allies, particularly Donald Trump, is seen as a factor that might provoke a crisis within the Western bloc and leave Russia in an advantageous position.

The dilemmas surrounding Europe’s engagement in conflicts outside its continent are evident. Most European states are wary of being drawn into military operations, whether against Russia or in the Middle East. Sociological surveys indicate a low readiness among EU citizens for war, explaining the continent’s reticence in offering robust support to the US or Israel in any conflict with Iran.

Yet, there’s an internal contradiction: supporting Ukraine as a means to restrain Russia is viewed as a way for Europe to avoid direct military involvement, even as Russian aggression is seen as an inevitable threat sooner or later.

Relations with the Trump administration remain significant. The former president’s rhetoric about betrayal from Europe, his demands for assistance in conflicts, but simultaneous reluctance to invoke NATO’s mechanisms officially, has led to a trust crisis in the alliance. Europeans fear the US will lose interest in providing security guarantees for the continent—a partnership for which they have long paid through investments and cooperation.

Despite historical parallels with previous US administrations, experts urge focusing on current challenges and moving beyond personal grievances or outdated partnership models. Today’s political infantilism in Europe calls for a strategic rethink, to avoid being mere observers or “cheap labor” in global conflicts. Outlining a new strategic course is seen as crucial for the Euro-Atlantic community’s stability, security, and effectiveness as threats from Russia, China and others escalate.

The discussion also stressed Ukraine’s new role as an outpost on Europe’s eastern flank, and the importance of technological and military cooperation among allies to tackle future challenges.
