Political Games Around the Ceasefire: Negotiations, Diplomacy, and Global Players' Influence

Anton Kuchekhidze analyzes why Ukraine and Russia employ peace rhetoric, how it impacts global politics, and the roles of China and Trump.

On May 7, the Center for Public Analytics Vezha invited political scientist and international expert Anton Kuchekhidze to discuss the political situation surrounding the war, ceasefire mechanisms, and the negotiation process.

The discussion noted that during wartime, air raid sirens and sheltering children have become routine. Ukraine announced a ceasefire regime, but Russia did not support this initiative and claimed to have downed over 300 Ukrainian drones on the night of May 6 to 7.

Kuchekhidze explained that both sides conduct political maneuvers, using peace rhetoric for pressure on their opponent and the international community. Russia announced an intent for a truce by May 9 as a symbolic humanitarian act. In response, Ukraine declared a unilateral ceasefire without specifying a date and emphasized its readiness for reciprocal military actions.

The conversation also addressed Donald Trump's role, whom Russia seeks to leverage in its information campaign. Ukrainian diplomacy, amidst changes in support from the US and EU, aims to keep communication channels open to avoid negative information backdrops.

Special attention was given to China's role, declaring neutrality but pursuing its own geopolitical interests by publishing peace plans and influencing Ukraine and its partners. Meanwhile, several countries remain neutral, focusing on their economic benefits.

Kuchekhidze highlights the importance of Ukraine's diplomatic flexibility, needing to balance positions between the West and East while staying open to support and new negotiation initiatives from the US, China, and the EU. He also notes it is impossible to set an exact end date for the war, as this could impact morale and political backing.

The discussion concludes that Ukraine should act cautiously in external rhetoric, maintain diplomatic flexibility, and seek support from international partners despite a complex global context.
