Mass Strikes on Yaroslavl Refinery and Rostov: Night Results and the Context of the Russian Parade

Russian targets suffered heavy attacks overnight, striking the Yaroslavl refinery, industrial assets in Rostov and Perm. Review of consequences and Russian reactions.

On the night of May 8, the Russian Federation was hit by a powerful wave of attacks. Missile and drone strikes targeted the Yaroslavl oil refinery—one of Russia's largest, which serves the military and produces fuel. The industrial area in Rostov was also hit, with attacks on enterprises linked to navigation modules for drones and missile and aviation technology.

In Perm, another oil refinery and a pumping station were targeted. Due to the security situation and drone attacks in Perm, the Victory Day military parade was canceled. Authorities explained this decision was for public safety.

The situation remains tense in Moscow. In anticipation of possible attacks, the city has restricted events for May 9, and foreign leaders will not attend the parade. The Immortal Regiment has been canceled, online events are recommended, and central security is heightened.

Despite Russian authorities’ warnings and threats of retaliatory attacks on Kyiv if the parade is targeted, Ukraine notes that Russia initiated the aggression. Russian officials announced withdrawal from negotiations unless Ukraine makes territorial concessions. Ukrainian forces are preparing further strikes on Russian military targets and ramping up drone operations with continued volunteer support.

EU officials state their embassies will remain in Kyiv despite Russian threats. Ukraine’s defense forces thank NGOs and foundations for providing drones and equipment, enabling precision strikes on aggressor targets.
